Meet the family from Perth who own a racehorse
12th Dec 2017
Gifted a unit in Saganaki by his wife for his birthday, Alan Cundall’s entire family fell in love with horse ownership and now they’ve taken their experience even further.
Tell us about you and the family
I own a car detailing business here in Perth and used to run my own business as a butcher in New Zealand. We’ve been in Perth as a family for over 20 years after moving from Invercargill.
How did you first get introduced to horse ownership?
It started with my wife buying me a unit in Saganaki as an early birthday present, which was pretty special.
I enjoyed being a thoroughbred owner so I spoke to a couple of friends who each bought a unit, then one of my wife’s friends bought a unit. Not wanting to be left out, my wife then bought a unit of her own, then my daughter bought a unit and then my son bought one unit – and he loved the experience so much, he bought another nine!

So, by my reckoning that’s a total of 16 units in Saganaki owned by the extended Cundall network and we’ve already signed up for the Priority Access Vouchers for the Mick Price-trained yearling to be bought at the Magic Millions auction on the Gold Coast.
How is the experience working for you?
Especially with a group of us all owning units it’s a great thing to share and discuss together. We enjoy receiving the weekly updates on Saganaki’s progress, my daughter will phone with news, we update our friends in the pub and we love having all this information from the miRunners team.

We’re planning to come over to the Gold Coast in 2018, travel down to Kris Lees’ stables and then hopefully see our horse race where getting together with all the owners on race day will be especially exciting.
Where does the interest in horse racing come from?
I’ve always been interested in horses, thoroughbreds and standardbred pacers especially. My father bred standardbreds and I used to ride when I was younger so horses have always been part of my family experience although until miRunners I was never able to afford one or even consider owning one..
“Until miRunners I was never able to afford one or even consider owning a horse”
All I can say to miRunners is keep up the good work. I encourage everyone to just get into it and buy your unit.
It’s a great concept, you’re kept up-to-date, you know what’s going on week-to-week, you’re involved with a very special experience – and all for the price of a weekly beer once you’ve purchased your unit!
